The ONE Thing - Book Review

dlouhyderrick

In search of a new book on productivity, I stumbled upon Gary Keller's The ONE Thing and all I can say is WOW. This is definitely a quick read, but if you're like me, it took me a lot longer than it should have as with each chapter I really tried to implement Gary's wisdom into my life before moving on. With most books, I really try to leverage my 3-key-takeaways to pick a more concise list of things to work on, as sometimes it can become overwhelming to have all these new tools we need to add to our toolkit. However, this book, and the accompanying website and tools they offer, has way more than 3 and

I found them all too good not to leverage NOW. It also helps that most of them build upon the previous. Meaning once I started, I felt the pull to keep working and implementing.

Regardless, below is my 1-2-3. This is probably one of the best books I've read on productivity to date. Let me know in the comments if you've read or do read and have thoughts you'd love to kick around together!

1-2-3

100 Word Summary

This book focuses on one thing (imagine that) and that is what is our ONE Thing. It is what guides us and after we understand our purpose, we can set our “big scary” goals to put us on the journey towards our ONE Thing. This book is a great resource to understand the science behind why multitasking DOES NOT work, how to properly set goals, how purpose drives priorities which drive productivity, the “Three Commitments” we NEED to make to achieve our ONE Thing, and the “Four Thieves of Productivity”. Live a life of zero regrets; find your ONE Thing.

2 Reasons I Read the Book

  1. Always love a good and highly raved book on productivity

  2. This book also has tangible resources like an online community, worksheets, and events to take part in!

3 Key Takeaways

  1. Our guiding purpose in life should be the focus on the question and then into the answer... "What is the ONE Thing I can do such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?"

  2. "If disproportionate results come from one activity, then you must give that one activity disproportionate time"; Three Things in Order to Block Time Successfully - 1. Time Block Your Time Off; 2. Time Block Your ONE Thing; 3. Time Block Your Planning. (Time blocking is a key unlock I've already started playing around with since they day I read this and it is MAGICAL!)

  3. One of the three commitments to our ONE thing is being on the pursuit of mastery. "Mastery actually means you're a master of what you know and an apprentice of what you don't."; Our ONE Thing time blocks should be heavily influenced by our pursuit of mastery - aka apprentice work
